Jenny's House - Gümüşlük
Jenny's beach front house in Gümüşlük is so exceptional we felt we must offer it to our guests. Thanks to its historical significance and building limitations this small fishing village is still an unspoilt peaceful haven on Bodrum Peninsula.
Jenny, a discerning collector of old Turkish carpets and kilims, has been coming to Turkey for 20 years. Her little village house with its sea front setting and spectacular view of the bay and the Greek island of Kalymnos is the result of her long love affair with Gümüşlük.
Step down from the terrace and you are literally on the beach, a few barefoot steps from an early morning swim. The shaded terrace with cushion strewn couches is at its best in the early evening as the sun slips over the horizon casting a warm glow over the house's stone facade. Sundowners have never tasted better in this tranquil setting. The stone walls keep the house cool in summer and for the hottest months there is air conditioning both up and downstairs.
For relaxing in the sun you need never go further than the upstairs terrace . The view of 'Rabbit Island' and the entrance to Gümüşlük Bay varies only with the occasional passage of yachts. French windows open from the double bedroom with en suite toilet and shower. Jenny has kept the village charm of the house intact , enhanced with woven Turkish cushion covers and kilims from her collection. The kitchen/lounge is well equipped for dining at home and children or extra guests can sleep on the downstairs divans or in the 'ship's cabin' half way up the stairs. The small downstairs bathroom also has a shower. Jenny has a Topper dinghy and 2 mini canoes which guests are welcome to use.
Gümüşlük is definitely the spot to unwind, stroll, swim and indulge in the best of local fish and fresh authentic Turkish Cuisine. Its waterfront restaurants and cafes have long been popular with local people. Holiday accommodation here consists only of converted village houses and one or two small hotels so the atmosphere is very low key, traffic and noise free.
Yalikavak and Turgutreis are small seaside towns a short bus or taxi ride away with beaches, marinas and a colourful weekly market. Local buses depart regularly on the 45 minute trip to Bodrum. Milas-Bodrum Airport is approximately 1 hour away.
